West Ferris Minor Hockey Rep. Try outs Policies & Procedures A) No player can try out without being registered with the W.F.M.H.A.. Registration is to be done at our office only and not at the tryouts. There are no exceptions as there will be no insurance for such a player. B) All players living outside the boundaries of North Bay must have a N.O.H.A. player tryout permission and release form signed by the home association. It does not matter if they have played for W.F.M.H.A. in the past. They need to be released and the form has to be in the Conveners hands before they go on the ice C) Prior to the tryouts the coach must have his budget approved by his convener and an information flyer prepared for the try outs outlining his team program and individual player costs. D) The Convener is responsible for the tryouts and will be involved in players cuts. He or she will also preside over the team selections and make sure that all players are notified after selections and cuts are to be made on an one on one with the coaches, Convener & player in a private room when possible. No cuts until after 2nd tryout and cuts must be approved by Convener. E) The Convener will attend each teams first team meeting and represent the W.F.M.H.A.. They will provide information when required and advise the coaches and parents to contact them on any issues that cannot be resolved within the team. F) All players must be dressed in West Ferris colours, blue & white. The pants & gloves are blue, and the helmets are white. Team socks are to be purchased from the teams budgets - white home and blue away. G) Player lists must be submitted to and approved by the Convener prior to issuing of cards.
Players moving up a level - Minor to Major or Major to Minor 1. The W.F. Executive will appoint a Committee to manage the selection process. 2. Players must try out at their own level and attend 2 tryouts there when possible before being eligible to try out at a higher level. 3. Players cannot try out at the higher level for the first two tryouts of the higher level team. 4. Coaches may after the second tryout request the Convener to arrange for up to 3 minors or underage players at a time to try out for the higher team. If approved by the Committee, the Convener shall arrange for the players to try out. Coaches are not to approach parents regarding a child trying out at a higher level. The number of minors or underage players that can be requested will depend on the number of majors available for consideration and the level of talent at both levels and that is a decision of the Committee. The Committee may recommend other players to try out. 5. The Convener shall approach the parents and the lower level coach to request that the players attend the higher level tryout. If the parents agree the player may attend the higher level tryout. 6. The maximum number of underage or minor players on a higher/major team is 3, however, the Committee, and/or the W.F. executive may fix a different number depending on all of the circumstances. 7. The Convener and the Committee appointed by the W.F.M.H. executive shall assess the player or players and in consultation with the coaching staff shall approve or reject their placement on the higher team. 8. A skater must rank in the top 1/3 of the group that he is trying out for; that is a top 3 forward, or top 2 defenseman. Goalies must be in the top 2 goalies. In order to be eligible to play for the higher team. Ability and need for players shall also be assessed in making this decision. 9. Players approved shall then go through the draft according to the rules of the draft when there is two teams or more in one division. 10. Parents wishing to have a child jump 2 levels must submit a letter to the Head Convener stating the reasons and upon a coaches request if approved for tryout by the Convener or the Committee, the Convener may contact the parents to have the player try out at the higher level. The player will then be evaluated and the same procedures as above will apply. This will only occur in rare and exceptional circumstances. It is not the policy of the West Ferris Minor Hockey to allow such a move. West Ferris Minor Hockey - Rep Team Draft Procedure 1. All rep teams coaches shall follow the procedure set for the draft where there are two teams at the same level. They shall cooperate with the Convener and follow his directions. Any coach unable to do this may be removed. 2. The Convener is in charge of the draft and will make all required decisions. 3. The child of a coach and their staff (3 protections in total) shall be rated by the coaches as well as the Convener and the Committee and shall be slotted into the draft at his appropriate level. No other protections shall apply unless the two teams, the Convener and the Committee agree. 4. It is the responsibility of the coaches involved and his evaluating staff to evaluate each and every player that is at the tryout. In order to ensure a fair and consistent draft at all levels all coaches, Conveners, Committee and/or executive members will use and be provided with a player evaluation sheet. See Appendix A. 5. Upon commencement of the draft the coach having first choice of skaters shall have second choice of goalies. The selection shall reverse in each round in order that a fair result is achieved. 6. The draft shall proceed until 2 or more full teams are selected (minimum of 15 players) per team subject to adjustment by the Committee based on special circumstances. 7. Prior to leaving the room, coaches in consultation with the Convener may trade such players as they may agree on. Any players traded shall be of equal quality and position in the draft. 8. Teams are subject to the approval of the Convener and may be adjusted as required. The objective is to have both teams equal. The Convener in consultation with the Committee will have the option to equalize the teams at a later date. 9. Neither coaches, parents or players shall be able to select a certain team or coach. Any special circumstances may be addressed to the Convener at the start of the tryouts. 10. Players selected on the team at the time of the draft may not be cut or traded after the draft, but may be moved by the Convener to equalize the teams 11. Players must attend the tryouts and be at 2 of the sessions including the last one in order to be eligible for the draft. Players not attending the tryouts due to special circumstances must contact the Convener in order to be considered part of the draft. 12. No player can be signed without the approval of the Convener and the cards will be controlled by the Convener. If the Convener or the Committee believes the draft has been unfair, they may require the draft to be held again or changes made to the team lists to create a fair result. 13. All players shall be given fair and equal ice time.
